Buying PPE with your NDIS funding

To support participants through COVID-19, the NDIS has made it possible to buy Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as face masks and gloves with their NDIS funding. In this article we explain who is eligible and how it works.

Can I buy PPE with my NDIS funding?

You can buy PPE with your NDIS funding if you meet these two criteria:

  • You live in an area that the NDIS has categorised as having active cases of COVID-19.
    (NOTE: At the time of publishing, this applies to Victoria, New South Wales and some parts of Queensland, however this is subject to change. If you’re unsure whether you live in an applicable area, we suggest contacting the NDIS on 1800 800 100.)
  • You receive more than one hour a day of face-to-face daily living supports (on average)

If you live outside of a designated COVID-19 area or receive less than an hour of face-to-face supports each day, you are unable to use your NDIS funding to buy PPE.

What is PPE?

PPE is clothing or equipment designed to keep you safe from infection.

The PPE you can purchase with your NDIS funds includes face masks, face shields and gloves. It does not include hand sanitiser, which you will have to buy with your own money.

What budget does PPE come out of?

PPE can be purchased using your Core supports budget (with the Low-Cost Disability-Related Health Consumables line item).

If you don’t have Core funding in your NDIS plan, you should contact the NDIS on 1800 800 100 to discuss your options.

Can my service provider charge me for their PPE?

If you meet the above criteria for PPE, providers that deliver face-to-face supports are able to charge you for the PPE they wear during the session. Before they do, they should discuss the matter with you and make sure you agree to be charged.If you live in an area that the NDIS has categorised as having active cases of COVID-19, then providers that deliver face-to-face supports are able to charge you for the PPE they wear during the session.
