9 things you might not know about Plan Management
Over the years, our team has heard a lot of misconceptions about Plan Management. In this article, we answer some of the most common questions we’ve been asked about this fantastic – but sometimes misunderstood – service!
1. Do I need to be eligible for Plan Management?
No. Every single NDIS participant has the right to have Plan Management included in their NDIS plan. This is a key part of the NDIS and is protected by law.
2. Do I need to explain why I want Plan Management?
No. If you ask for Plan Management, you will get it included in your plan – no explanation needed!
3. Do I have to pay for Plan Management?
No. If you ask for Plan Management, you will get specific funding in your NDIS plan to cover the cost. You will never have to pay for the costs of aPlan Manager out of your own pocket.
4. Will I get less funds for other supports if I ask for Plan Management?
No. Whether or not you get funding for Plan Management has zero impact on your other budgets. The amount of funding you receive in your NDIS plan is worked out based on your support needs, goals, and various other factors. Funding for Plan Management is then added on top.
5. Is Plan Management only for people who can’t manage their own funds?
No. This is a common misconception, but Plan Management is suited to a wide range of people. Whether you want to spend less time on admin and more time on the things that matter to you, have access to a team of experts, or use handy tools to track your budgets (like the Plan Partners Dashboard), there are many reasons why you might choose Plan Management. The most important thing is that you go with the fund management option that you want and that allows you to live the life you want.
6. Can I have both Plan Management and Support Coordination?
Yes. These are two different services and you can have both included in your plan (provided you meet the eligibility criteria for Support Coordination – more on that here). While Plan Management is to do with managing your NDIS plan’s funding, Support Coordination helps you find and connect with service providers.
7. Can I get Plan Management for just some of my funds?
Yes. You have the choice to Plan Manage as much, or as little, of your plan’s funding as you like. This is called “partially managed”. So, if there’s a specific category of supports you'd like to self-manage or NDIA manage, you can do that while Plan Managing the rest of them. If you want to do this, you should mention it in your planning meeting when asking for Plan Management.
8. Is there a limit on how long I can have Plan Management?
No. You can have Plan Management for as long as you like. If your plan ends and you have a review meeting, you will need to ask for Plan Management to be included in your new plan – it will not be included automatically. As we’ve already mentioned, you’re entitled to receive Plan Management and don’t need to give an explanation why – that’s true no matter how long you’ve had it for.
9. Do I need to find a Plan Manager that's local to my area?
No. Because Plan Management is not a face-to-face service, it doesn’t matter where your Plan Manager is located. This means you can choose a Plan Manager from anywhere around the country, based on their expertise or the handy budget-tracking tools they offer.
