Claiming partial NDIS support units 

Under the NDIS, participants are charged for the actual support they receive. And so, as a service provider, you need to claim pro-rata for any supports priced per hour (or per unit).  This means, invoicing for the actual time spent delivering the service, not rounding up to the full hour. 

This helps ensure participants are not overcharged and funds are used fairly and transparently  and applies whether you’re delivering

  • Face-to-face support
  • Travel time
  • Non-face-to-face activities (like progress notes or rostering)
  • NDIA-requested report writing 

It can also apply to eligible cancellation fees, such as when a participant cancels at short notice or fails to show up for a scheduled support.   

Examples for claiming partial NDIS support units 

Let’s say a support item has a maximum hourly rate of $193.99 (as per the NDIS Price Guide). If you deliver only 30 minutes, you claim 0.5 of a unit, not the full hour.

  • You must claim either a quantity of units or time in hours, not both (regardless of whether you send invoices via email or to Plan Partners through your Provider Dashboard).
  • Payments are calculated by multiplying the unit price by the quantity you claim.

The below examples are taken from the NDIS Price Guide (PAPL), and show how to claim when delivering partial support units. 

Example 1  

A provider agrees to deliver a support to a participant at an hourly rate of $100. 

If the provider delivers support for 30 minutes, they can claim for a quantity of 0.5 units or 0.30 hours. This should be claimed at a unit price of $100, resulting in payment of $50. 

Example 2  

A provider agrees to deliver a support to a participant at an hourly rate of $190. 

If the provider delivers 45 minutes, they can claim for a quantity of 0.75 units or 0.45 hours. This should be claimed at a unit price of $190, resulting in payment of $142.50. 

Caps to travel time for Therapy supports 

Under the new NDIS Pricing Arrangements and Price Limits (PAPL), travel claims for therapy supports have been reduced. As a provider delivering Therapy supports (such as physiotherapy, speech pathology, psychology, dietetics, podiatry), you can now only claim up to 50% (instead of 100%) of the therapy rate for travel time calculated on a pro-rata basis.  

For example: If a therapy session is 30 minutes in length, the maximum travel time claimable is 15 minutes.
