Short Term Accommodation (STA) and the holiday season
The NDIA has advised us of an increased focus on reviewing claims for STA, so we’re making sure that any STA invoices are processed with additional care.
All STA invoices are now reviewed by our specialised accommodation team, and as part of this process, you may be asked for additional information to support your claim to ensure we are claiming as per NDIS guidelines.
Whilst we can’t guarantee the NDIA will approve any claim, capturing this information upfront will create a better chance of a successful claim.
What is Short Term Accommodation (STA)?
Short Term Accommodation is support for participants who need to live out of their home for a short period of respite care. It can be used for participants to give carers a short break from their caring role.
Short Term Accommodation includes the support you receive during your stay.
What is not included in STA?
The below items and travel are not considered an NDIS support and cannot be claimed through STA:
- Interstate travel
- STA where informal supports were also attending
- Visiting family & friends
- Work related travel
- School holiday programs
- Cruises
- Health retreats
- Holiday accommodation
- Entry tickets to events
- Travel, food or activity costs for 1-1 care cannot be claimed through STA (this would be considered a personal expense)
- Living alone and independently or receiving SIL supports – are no longer eligible for STA
- For any reason as outlined in the 3rd of October “Supports that cannot be claimed” list.
Key questions to consider when looking to book STA

- Have you been funded for 1-1 support in your plan or group funding?
- What is the reason for STA?
- Does the accommodation component of the STA represent value for money?
- Are you using a registered NDIS respite provider?
- Do you have a service agreement with your provider?
- Does attending STA provide respite for your usual carers?
