[00:00:00] Hi everyone, Tristan here and welcome to a very special episode of My NDIS Journey.

[00:00:19] Hi everyone, Tristan here and welcome to a very special episode of My NDIS Journey, coming to you from my recently refurbished SDA apartment. I’ve been here for five weeks, loving it. It’s my NDIS dreams come true and will feature quite a bit in today’s episode.

[00:00:37] So the best thing about living in my own unit is 100% all the independence that it affords me. Everything is in my control, it’s my choice. It’s fantastic that I’m now responsible for the day-to-day things like cooking, which turns out I’m actually good at, shopping, getting to and from work. It’s just a completely new take on my life and I’m loving every minute of it.

[00:01:01] Of course there’s probably been a couple of hiccups along the way — that’s only to be expected moving into your own place. A few appliances were playing up, had to get the repairmen in to fix those things. But the great thing is I’m surrounded by a beautiful network of people who are here quickly fixing what I need to ensure that I can keep living independently. So hiccups are just a bump in the road and everything has been so, so worthwhile. It’s such an empowering feeling.

[00:01:26] To have achieved one of my NDIS goals is incredible. But the important thing is it’s just been a goal my entire life. I always said to Mum and Dad I wanted to move out by the age of 30 — and I’ve done it thanks to the NDIS. It goes to show that with the right support, we can do everything our able-bodied peers can do. We can live the same dreams, the same goals. That’s such an empowering thing.

[00:01:47] So the question on all of your lips is probably: what is my next goal? And the truth is, I’m not sure yet. I’ve been working my whole life towards moving into my own place and living independently. I’m just going to take a breath, enjoy this and relish this great opportunity. We’ll see what the future holds — but it’s still very, very exciting.

[00:02:05] And as exciting as it is that this chapter is ending and that I’m in my own new place, it unfortunately means that I will no longer be hosting My NDIS Journey. But that is okay, because the series will be continuing with a new friend in charge. So everyone, meet Zach.

[00:02:25] Zach, what have you been up to lately? What have you been doing?

[00:02:28] I’ve been doing some reasons — yeah, nice — playing some sports.

[00:02:33] What’s your favourite sport?

[00:02:36] My favourite sport is basketball. I love it.

[00:02:41] Do you go to soccer too?

[00:02:43] Yeah.

[00:02:46] And with all these things you do, who are the people that help you do them?

[00:02:53] My carers, Mum and Dad, and friends.

[00:03:05] So all these people are your lovely support network — they help you do all the things you like to do?

[00:03:08] Yeah.

[00:03:11] Who’s your go-to at Plan Partners? Who helps you out?

[00:03:13] That would be Rolly.

[00:03:15] And how does Rolly work with you and your NDIS plan?

[00:03:18] He helps with things like basketball and living my goals.

[00:03:29] He makes you the boss?

[00:03:30] Yeah, I’m the boss.

[00:03:39] Well, I’m going to pass the baton on to Zach. It’s been an absolute thrill and pleasure sharing my NDIS journey with you all. I hope you’ve gained some insight into what it’s been like on my journey. Now we move into Zach’s journey, which is equally as cool.

[00:03:58] If there’s anything to take away from accessing the NDIS, it’s that it’s all about choice and control. Fight for what you want. You’re surrounded by a beautiful network of people willing to help — rely on that network and use it as much as you can.

[00:04:13] Thanks so much and I’ll see you on the flip side. Cheers.
