NDIS in 7 easy steps

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is transforming how people living with a disability receive support. The new scheme opens up a whole new world of possibilities. But as with any big change, navigating it can sometimes feel a bit overwhelming. To help you prepare and get the most out of the NDIS, we’ve created this simple step-by-step guide.

STEP 1: GET PREPARED

Before you begin, it’s important to get clued up on how the process works and what’s expected of you. Here’s how.

  • Check if you’re eligible at NDIS website and apply.
  • Learn the basics about what the NDIS can fund and how it works.
  • Start your planning. Don’t wait until your first meeting to begin this process: start thinking about it now by using our simple checklist.
  • Set a date. Organise a meeting with your Local Area Coordinator (LAC) for the NDIS - make sure it’s face-toface.
  • Ask for help from the Plan Partners team at any time.

Step 1: Get prepared

Before you begin, it’s important to get clued up on how the process works and what’s expected of you. Here’s how.

  • Check if you’re eligible at www.ndis.gov.au and apply.
  • Learn the basics about what the NDIS can fund and how it works. The NDIS website is a great place to start.
  • Start your planning. Don’t wait until your first meeting to begin this process: start thinking about it now by using our simple checklist.
  • Set a date. Organise a meeting with your Local Area Coordinator (LAC) for the NDIS - make sure it’s face-to- face.
  • Ask for help from the Plan Management Partners team at any time.

Step 2: Attend your NDIS planning meeting

Your NDIS planning meeting with the LAC is your one opportunity to make clear what need and want in the upcoming year. This meeting will be the main input for your NDIS plan. So make sure all your needs are heard by doing the following:

  • Bring your checklist and any supporting documents to refer to during your meeting.
  • Ask a friend or someone you trust to come along for support.
  • Take plenty of notes so you can refer back to them later.
  • Express your needs and your goals in life clearly so that your planner knows exactly what you want in your plan. If you’d like to include plan management or support coordination then this is the time to raise it. Remember, plan management is available to everyone, while not everyone is eligible for support coordination.
  • Ask questions! Don’t be afraid to speak up or ask questions if anything is unclear.

Step 3: Review your NDIS plan

Once you’ve received your draft NDIS plan, it’s up to you to review it. Remember, it’s your plan so you get the final say.

  • Check all the details. Make sure all details are correct and you’re happy with how your funds have been allocated.
  • Contact your LAC and ask for a review if there are any issues with your plan.
  • Let your existing service providers know that you’ve received your plan.

Step 4: Choose your plan manager

If you’ve chosen to include plan management, you’ll need to get your plan manager on board before you begin organising your supports.

  • Select and contact a plan manager. You can talk to us if you’d like to know more about how it all works.
  • Set up a service agreement with your plan manager. This is a legal agreement which describes how and when the support will be provided.

Step 5: Organise your supports

Organising your supports is an important task, so now is the time to think about your options and make sure your chosen provider is the right fit for you and your needs.

  • Select and contact a support coordinator if support coordination is part of your plan.
  • Choose your service provider(s). If you already receive supports, you can either stay with your current provider(s) or choose a new one. If you’d like to change providers or require a new service, spend some time researching service providers in your area before making a decision.
  • Set up service agreements with your service providers to confirm when the support will be provided, the costs and the fees you need to pay. Make sure you’re happy with them before signing!

Step 6: Receive your services

With the planning phase complete, it’s time to receive your supports and start enjoying the improvements they bring. But don’t forget to:

  • Keep a note of all the supports you receive and when.
  • Keep track of how your budget is being spent (if you’ve selected plan management then we can help you do this)
  • Let us know if you have any questions about the way your plan is being managed.

Step 7: Your annual review

Each year, you’ll have the chance to review your plan and communicate any feedback or changes required in a meeting with your LAC. Here’s how to make the most of it:

  • Prepare in advance. Give some thought to what you’d like to talk about in your review meeting and make a list of anything you’d like to change and why.
  • Specify your needs. If you still need the service, remember to ask for plan management again as it won’t be included unless you request it. Similarly, if you still need support coordination be prepared to ask for it and explain why it’s still needed.
  • Talk to our team if you have any questions about your review or what to expect.
